GIRLS CONNECT
A support group for Asperger’s Syndrome/High Functioning Autistic Teenage Girls & Their Families
Founded by Louise Vallis, Girls Connect is a support group for families with teenage girls with Asperger’s/High Functioning Autism. The age focus is 13+ to young adult. The main purpose of this group is to provide mutual support.
The group meets regularly at coffee mornings, talks, events:
- to offer the girls/mothers/families the chance to get together and share experiences and information;
- for the girls to build friendships on-line and at regular activities where they can practise social/relationship/life skills;
- to prepare the girls for independent living after school and home.
Activities provided for young teenagers have included an art therapy course, a social skills course, a beauty and fashion workshop, talks by well known Autism specialists, and regular coffee mornings and social functions. All have been well attended and appreciated by the 50 plus member families in this area.
The group also helps to further the understanding and public awareness of High Functioning Autism and Aspergers in girls and young women.
